Un viaggio dalle Highlands al Monferrato

Siamo nel Maggio del 2010, quando a Mombaruzzo nasce un nuovo progetto. Due realtà si incontrano, la famiglia Berta e Diageo Italia. Nasce l’idea: Oltre il Vallo, una grappa invecchiata pregiata, affinata in botti di single malt scotch whisky.

Il progetto è l’unione di due culture: la passione artigianale della famiglia Berta e la maestria della migliore tradizione scozzese, rappresentata da un’azienda globale come Diageo, leader mondiale delle bevande alcoliche premium. Due culture così diverse, accomunate tuttavia dalla passione per la distillazione.

Da una parte la grappa, tradizione delle campagne della terra italiana e dall’altra il single malt scozzese, frutto dei campi del nord Europa.

Il nome Oltre il Vallo ricorda come nessuno sia mai riuscito ad oltrepassare le antiche fortificazioni di Adriano, quel muro che rappresentò il confine più settentrionale dell’Impero Romano in Britannia per gran parte del periodo di dominio romano su queste terre. Una fortificazione che divideva l’isola in due parti.

Nessuno riuscì mai ad andare oltre questo confine, fino ad oggi, quando Highlands e Monferrato si uniscono simbolicamente in un distillato invecchiato, affinato in barili di single malt scotch whisky, dove riposano per anni nelle cantine di invecchiamento della famiglia Berta.

Le botti, selezionate ad una ad una, arrivano da quelle terre lontane, dalle antiche e più pregiate distillerie scozzesi: Lagavulin, Caol Ila e Mortlach, nomi importanti che hanno fatto e fanno la storia del miglior whisky scozzese.

Di colore ambrato, Oltre il Vallo è caratterizzata da un sapore morbido e avvolgente. All’inizio è un’esplosione di profumi che spaziano dalle note di vinaccia, uva passa, frutta secca e mandorla. In un secondo momento queste sensazioni lasciano il posto a un leggero sentore di fumo, torba e malto.

Setosa e avvolgente, permane a lungo in bocca e riconferma al palato le sensazioni olfattive di morbidezza, in un bouquet di profumi che ricordano l’arancia, la nocciola e, sul finire, il tabacco e il miele.
