Eine Reise von Highlands nach Monferrato

Im Mai 2010 wird eine neue Idee geboren: Oltre il Vallo, ein gereifter, edler Grappa, der in Single Malt Scotch Whisky Fässern ausgebaut wird. Die Idee besteht darin, zwei Kulturen zu vereinen und somit die Leidenschaft der Familie Berta mit der Fertigkeit der besten schottischen Tradition. So beginnt die Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Familie Berta und der im Premium-Segment der Spirituosen weltweit führenden Firma Diageo. Zwei sehr unterschiedliche Kulturen, die aber eine Leidenschaft gemeinsam haben: das Destillieren edler Spirituosen. Von der italienischen Seite kommt der Grappa, von der schottischen der Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Der Name Oltre il Vallo erinnert uns daran, wie es nie jemand geschafft hat, den antiken Hadrianswall zu stürmen (vallum Aelium; römisches, von Kaiser Hadrian erbautes Grenzbefestigungssystem). Dieser Wall stellte über lange Zeit die nördlichste Grenze des Römischen Reichs in Britannien dar; eine Festung, die die Insel entzwei teilte. Es ist nie jemand über diese Grenze hinaus gekommen, aber heute vereinen sich die Highlands und der Monferrato symbolisch in einem gereiften Destillat, das im Reifekeller der Familie Berta über Jahre in Single Malt Scotch Whisky Fässern ausgebaut wird. Die Fässer unterstehen einer strengen Selektion und kommen von weit her. Die prestigereichsten schottischen Destillerien, die die Fässer liefern, sind folgende: Lagavulin, Caol Ila und Mortlach - wichtige Namen, die unter den schottischen Whiskys Geschichte gemacht haben und heute noch machen. Oltre il Vallo ist bernsteinfarben und am Gaumen weich und umhüllend. Am Anfang betört eine Explosion von Geschmacksnoten, die an Trester, Rosinen, Dörrfrüchte und Mandeln erinnern. Danach verführt eine leichte Note von Rauch, Torf und Malz. Der Grappa ist seidig, einhüllend und lang anhaltend und bestätigt am Gaumen, was das Bouquet mit feinen Anklängen von Orangen, Haselnüssen sowie Tabak und Honig verspricht.
